Bamboo has played a major role in the socio-economic and cultural life of the entire North Eastern State of the country which is also known as “Bamboo Culture”. Assam has a long tradition of using Bamboo as a building materials and various household products including furniture. The Sonitpur District in the state of Assam is famous for its Bamboo crafts. Bamboo can substitute wood for making furniture. Bamboo board can be used to make school, office and showroom furniture, table tops and other surfaces that require high durability.The bamboo products including furniture and other value addition products are in nascent stage in Assam, though it has potentialities to grow. |
Apart from that, cottage industry including furniture making industry are in un-organized sector. Bamboo products have considerably become popular among the people in the recent past due to various factors, like for its better quality, durability ,added value and recent improvement in design. However, the market and bamboo cottage industry in the state are not in organized sector and lacks in proper information etc. To cater to the needs of setting up an information centre and bring all such cottage industry under one umbrella, it is felt that a Bamboo Bazar should be established on the north bank of the state i.e. in Tezpur. |

Selection of Location :- Sonitpur District is famous for its Bamboo production, its furniture and handicrafts etc. The proposed seasoning and treatment plant of Bamboo in Dhekiajuli shall be another added advantage as the plant has plan for making furniture with the seasoned Bamboo for more durability.The location of the project at Tezpur shall have various advantages because of its strategic location on the north bank of the state. The proposed location is located at the heart of the town and only at least 200 mt. away from the main market of the town but well within the market zone. Moreover, Tezpur is the doorway to the recently popular Tawang tourism routes and also it is one of the important destination for the tourist on the north bank with wide connectivity. It is also on the existing Kaziranga-Nameri-Tawang tourist route.
About Bamboo-Bazar :- As inadequate access to information and marketing support was found undermining the incomes of rural communities and entrepreneurs, and constraining the development of Bamboo sector. Marketing information services to local producers, collectors and trades shall be disseminated through establishing Bamboo-Bazar by using multiple channels of communication. Different types of information, such as price, value addition options and sustainable harvesting techniques would be provided to the target clients..Bamboo Bazar with a showroom measuring approximately 550 sq ft with internet accessibilities and other information facilities is planned at in Tezpur town. Apart from keeping the detail information and models of the Bamboo furniture , the bazar shall encourage the local artisans to popularize their products by giving wide publicity and assist them in selling their products.
